    A three-arm current comparator bridge, for impedance comparisons over the complex plane

    We present here the concept of three-arm current comparator impedance bridge, which allows comparisons among three unlike impedances. Its purpose is the calibration of impedances having arbitrary phase angles, against calibrated nearly-pure impedances. An analysis of the bridge optimal setting and proper operation is presented. To test the concept, a two terminal-pair digitally-assisted bridge has been realized; measurements of an air-core inductor and of an RC network versus decade resistance and capacitance standards, at kHz frequency, have been performed. The bridge measurements are compatible with previous knowledge of the standards' values with relative deviations in the 10^-5 -- 10^-6 range

    Endothelial dysfunction in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss: a review

    An endothelial dysfunction has been described in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) patients. The purpose of our review was to: i) identify, evaluate and review recent research about cardiovascular risk factors involvement and signs of endothelial dysfunction in ISSHL; ii) implication of these discovering in clinical practice and future research. A Medline literature search was conducted to identify any study on the involvement of endothelial dysfunction in ISSHL, published in the English language in the last decade. The following MEDLINE search terms were used: sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) and endothelial dysfunction (text words). Additional studies were identified by hand searching the references of original articles and review articles. Studies were not excluded on the basis of the qualitative or quantitative definitions of SSHL, treatment regimens, or outcome measures. Data were extracted from included papers by a reviewer. Information on the patients, investigations, methods, interventions, and outcomes were systematically analyzed. Characteristics and results of all included studies were reviewed systematically. High levels of adhesion molecules, hyperhomocysteinemia and lower folate levels, unbalanced oxidative status, a lower value of flow-mediated dilatation of brachial artery and a reduced percentage of circulating endothelial progenitor cells in patients affected by ISSHL support the hypothesis that this syndrome should be considered as a microcirculation disorder based on endothelial dysfunction and drive clinicians to implement all the traditional strategies used for preventing cardiovascular events, to also reduce the likelihood of ISSHL occurrence

    Primary Realization of Inductance and Capacitance Scales With a Fully Digital Bridge

    This article describes an automated electronic fully digital bridge for the comparison of four-terminal-pair (4TP) impedance standards in the audio frequency range. The bridge relative accuracy, which is on the order of 10-6, makes it suitable as a reference bridge for the realization of primary scales of inductance and capacitance in metrology institutes and calibration laboratories. The performances of this bridge were validated by comparing the results of the calibrations of inductance and capacitance standards with those obtained from an existing analog reference system based on the three-voltage method.     Network Digest analysis by means of association rules

    The continuous growth in connection speed allows huge amounts of data to be transferred through a network. An important issue in this context is network traffic analysis to profile communications and detect security threats. Association rule extraction is a widely used exploratory technique which has been exploited in different contexts (e.g., network traffic characterization). However, to discover (potentially relevant) knowledge a very low support threshold needs to be enforced hence generating a large number of unmanageable rules. To address this issue in network traffic analysis, an efficient technique to reduce traffic volume is needed. This paper presents a NEtwork Digest framework, which performs network traffic analysis by means of data mining techniques to characterize traffic data and detect anomalies. NED exploits continuous queries to efficiently perform realtime aggregation of captured network data and supports filtering operations to further reduce traffic volume focusing on relevant data. Furthermore, NED provides an efficient algorithm to perform refinement analysis by means of association rules to discover traffic features. Extracted rules allow traffic data characterization in terms of correlation and recurrence of feature patterns. Preliminary experimental results performed on different network dumps showed the efficiency and effectiveness of the NED framework to characterize traffic data

    Software customization to provide digital oscilloscope with enhanced period-measurement features

    This paper tackles the problem of signal period measurements by means of oscilloscopes. First, the performance of two last-generation scopes, implementing a zero-crossing algorithm, is evaluated. Then, after a brief resume of alternative measurement techniques, a solution to enhance the period-measurement capability of scopes is proposed and implemented in the LeCroy WaveMaster 8620A software. Finally, the results of the tests carried out on different signal waveforms are reported and analyzed

    Emergency decompressive craniectomy after removal of convexity meningiomas

    BACKGROUND: Convexity meningiomas are benign brain tumors that are amenable to complete surgical resection and are associated with a low complication rate. The aim of this study was to identify factors that result in acute postoperative neurological worsening after the removal of convexity meningiomas. METHODS: Clinical evaluation and neuroradiological analysis of patients who underwent removal of a supratentorial convexity meningioma were reviewed. Patients were selected when their postoperative course was complicated by acute neurological deterioration requiring decompressive craniectomy. RESULTS: Six patients (mean age: 43.3 years) underwent surgical removal of a supratentorial convexity meningioma. Brain shift (mean: 9.9 mm) was evident on preoperative imaging due to lesions of varying size and perilesional edema. At various times postoperatively, patient consciousness worsened (up to decerebrate posture) with contralateral paresis and pupillary anisocoria. Computed tomography revealed no postoperative hematoma, however, did indicate increased brain edema and ventricular shift (mean: 12 mm). Emergency decompressive craniectomy and brief ventilator assistance were performed in all patients. Ischemia of the ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery occurred in 3 patients and hydrocephalus occurred in 2 patients. Outcome was good in 2, fair in 2, 1 patient had severe disability, and 1 patient died after 8 months. CONCLUSIONS: Brain shift on preoperative imaging is a substantial risk factor for postoperative neurological worsening in young adult patients after the removal of convexity meningiomas. Emergency decompressive craniectomy must be considered because it is effective in most cases. Other than consciousness impairment, there is no reliable clinical landmark to guide the decision to perform decompressive craniectomy; however, brain ischemia may have already occurred

    A Capacitance Build-Up Method to Determine LCR Meter Errors and Capacitance Transfer

    We present a capacitance build-up method suitable for the determination of the measurement error of a capacitance meter. The method requires only a small number of uncalibrated base capacitors, to be connected in parallel in various combinations, and a single calibrated capacitor, which provides measurement traceability. The outcome of the method is both the determination of the meter error and the calibration of all the base capacitors; it can therefore be also considered a capacitance scaling method. The method's equations, cast in matrix form, express estimates and uncertainties for all the quantities of interest. As an example of application, a commercial LCR meter is calibrated in the ranges of (100-1000) pF and (1-10) nF at 1.6 and 10 kHz, with an accuracy at the level of a few parts in 10(6). The calibration is validated by comparison with an ultrahigh accuracy capacitance bridge

    Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and the risk of mortality or impaired physical function in stroke patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Aims: The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is a tool for assessing the risk of malnutrition (undernutrition) that can be calculated from albumin concentration, total peripheral lymphocyte count, and total cholesterol concentration. CONUT score has been proposed as a promising prognostic marker in several clinical settings; however, a consensus on its prognostic value in patients with stroke is lacking. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the relationship between CONUT score and clinical outcomes in patients with stroke based on all current available studies. Data synthesis: Systematic research on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science from inception to February 2023 was performed on the association between CONUT score and clinical outcomes in patients with stroke. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses were followed. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale quality assessment tool. Pooled effect estimation was calculated by a random-effect model. Through the initial literature search, 15 studies (all high-quality) including 16 929 patients were found to be eligible and analysed in the meta-analysis. A significant risk of malnutrition (in most studies defined by a CONUT score ≥5) was directly associated with mortality, higher risk of poor functional outcome according to the modified Rankin Scale and total infection development. Evidence was consistent for acute ischaemic stroke and preliminary for acute haemorrhagic stroke. Conclusion: CONUT score is an independent prognostic indicator, and it is associated with major disability and infection development during hospitalisation. Prospero id: CRD42022306560

    Kinetics of Thermal Decomposition of Particulate Samples of MgCO3: Experiments and Models

    In this work, we study the kinetics of thermal decomposition of MgCO3 in the form of particles of known size. In the experiments, the material is heated to a known temperature in a vacuum oven, and it is characterized, both before and after heating, by infrared spectroscopy and gravimetry. The agreement between the results of the two techniques is excellent. These results are rationalized by means of a model based on Languir's law, and the comparison with the experiments allows us to estimate the activation energy of the process. The reabsorption of atmospheric water by the oxide is shown spectroscopically, finding that is strongly influenced by the temperature of the process
